Acting
Angelina Jolie is an American actor, filmmaker, and humanitarian whose career has moved between independent drama, action spectacle, voice work, directing, and international advocacy. Born Angelina Jolie Voight in Los Angeles on June 4, 1975, she is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Her early screen work included childhood appearance beside Voight in Lookin' to Get Out, but her adult reputation developed in the 1990s through television films and character-driven roles. The HBO film Gia gave her one of her breakthrough parts as model Gia Carangi, and Girl, Interrupted brought wider recognition when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Lisa Rowe.
Jolie became a global star in the early 2000s. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider made her an action lead with international box-office reach, while Mr. & Mrs. Smith paired star comedy, action, and romance in one of the decade's most widely seen studio films. She continued to mix commercial thrillers such as Wanted, Salt, and The Tourist with voice performances, including Tigress in the Kung Fu Panda series. Disney's Maleficent reframed the Sleeping Beauty villain around grief, power, and maternal attachment, giving Jolie another signature role and a major family-audience success.
Alongside acting, Jolie developed a directing and producing career. Her films as a director include In the Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken, By the Sea, First They Killed My Father, and Without Blood. These projects show a consistent interest in war, displacement, historical trauma, and survival rather than a simple extension of her acting persona. First They Killed My Father, made in Khmer and based on Loung Ung's memoir of the Cambodian genocide, connected directly with Jolie's long personal and humanitarian involvement in Cambodia.

Jolie's public life is also defined by humanitarian work. After field visits with the United Nations refugee agency, she became a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 and later served as Special Envoy from 2012 until 2022. Her advocacy has focused on refugees, conflict-related sexual violence, children affected by war, and legal protections for displaced people. She has also written publicly about health decisions, including preventive surgeries undertaken after genetic testing indicated a high cancer risk, contributing to wider discussion of hereditary cancer screening and patient choice.
Her filmography includes award-winning drama, large-scale action, animation, and biographical performance, including her portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in Maria. Jolie remains unusual among contemporary Hollywood figures because the celebrity profile, screen career, directing work, and international advocacy are all central to how her work is understood.
