Nicole Kidman

The early 2000s marked one of the most acclaimed phases of Kidman's film career. She starred in Baz Luhrmann's musical Moulin Rouge!, earning an Academy Award nomination, and in the supernatural thriller The Others, a major commercial success. In 2002 she portrayed writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress as well as other major honors. She followed with films including Cold Mountain, Dogville, Birth, The Interpreter, The Golden Compass and Australia, alternating between prestige drama, experimental work and large-scale productions.

Kidman continued to receive recognition in the 2010s and 2020s. She earned Academy Award nominations for Rabbit Hole, Lion and Being the Ricardos, and appeared in films including Stoker, Paddington, The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Aquaman, Bombshell, The Northman and Babygirl. Her choices have often combined commercial projects with director-driven dramas, and she has frequently played characters marked by emotional restraint, instability, secrecy or social pressure.

Television became an increasingly important part of her later career. Kidman produced and starred in HBO's Big Little Lies, playing Celeste Wright, a performance that won her a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie. As an executive producer, she also shared in the Emmy for outstanding limited series. She later appeared in television projects including Top of the Lake: China Girl, The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, Expats, Special Ops: Lioness and The Perfect Couple.

Kidman founded the production company Blossom Films in 2010 and has also worked as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and UNIFEM/UN Women. She was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia and received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2024, becoming the first Australian actor to receive that honor. Her awards include an Academy Award, multiple Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award, Primetime Emmy Awards and major festival recognition. She was married to actor Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001 and later married musician Keith Urban; public biographical sources list her as the mother of four children.
