Danny Glover is an American actor, producer and activist whose work links mainstream Hollywood success with a long commitment to political and humanitarian causes. Born Daniel Leburn Glover in San Francisco on July 22, 1946, he grew up in a family shaped by labor, civil-rights activism and community engagement. Before becoming a screen actor, he studied and trained in the Bay Area, including work connected with the American Conservatory Theater, and developed a foundation in stage performance.
Glover's film career began in the late 1970s and expanded through a series of roles that made him one of the most recognizable American actors of the 1980s and 1990s. Early appearances included Escape from Alcatraz and Places in the Heart. His role as Mister in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple brought him major attention in a serious dramatic part, while Witness and Silverado showed his ability to work across prestige drama and genre storytelling.
The role that made Glover internationally famous was LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon series opposite Mel Gibson. Beginning with the 1987 film, Murtaugh became a signature character: weary, principled, funny and increasingly iconic through the sequels. The series turned Glover into a major action-comedy star while allowing him to retain the warmth and moral steadiness that had characterized much of his earlier work.
Glover's filmography remained wide-ranging after Lethal Weapon. He starred in Predator 2, earned acclaim for To Sleep with Anger, appeared in Grand Canyon, Angels in the Outfield, The Royal Tenenbaums, Saw, Dreamgirls, Shooter, 2012, Death at a Funeral, Beyond the Lights, Sorry to Bother You and The Last Black Man in San Francisco. He has also worked frequently as a producer, supporting independent and politically engaged cinema through Louverture Films.

Television has been another major part of Glover's career. He received Emmy recognition for projects such as Mandela, Lonesome Dove, Fallen Angels and Freedom Song, and he has appeared in series including Hill Street Blues, ER and Brothers & Sisters. His television work often reflects the same mixture of authority, compassion and social awareness found in his film roles.
Glover is also widely known for activism. He has supported labor rights, racial justice, global human rights and anti-apartheid and diaspora causes, and he has been associated with organizations including TransAfrica Forum. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, recognizing a public life that extends beyond acting. His career is therefore best viewed not only as a record of memorable performances, but also as an example of an artist using visibility in service of civic commitments.
