Jennifer Lawrence is an American actor and producer whose career combines independent drama, global franchise stardom, awards recognition, and later production work. Born Jennifer Shrader Lawrence in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 15, 1990, and raised in the Louisville area, she began acting professionally as a teenager after being discovered while visiting New York. Early television work led to a regular role on The Bill Engvall Show, but her film career soon became the center of her public identity.
Lawrence's breakthrough came with Winter's Bone, Debra Granik's 2010 Ozarks-set drama in which she played Ree Dolly, a teenager trying to protect her family while searching for her missing father. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and established the traits that many critics would later identify in her best work: directness, emotional force, minimal vanity, and an ability to make young characters seem guarded by necessity rather than by pose. She followed that success with a rapid move into mainstream cinema.
Her two most commercially important franchises arrived almost simultaneously. In the X-Men films, beginning with X-Men: First Class, she played Raven Darkholme, also known as Mystique, bringing vulnerability and anger to a character caught between assimilation and self-definition. In The Hunger Games, she played Katniss Everdeen, the reluctant revolutionary at the center of Suzanne Collins's dystopian story. The Hunger Games and its sequels made Lawrence one of the most visible actors in the world and helped prove that a female-led young-adult action franchise could dominate global box office.

Lawrence also became closely associated with director David O. Russell. Silver Linings Playbook won her the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow whose volatility and wit matched the film's bruised romantic comedy tone. American Hustle brought another Oscar nomination, and Joy gave her a starring vehicle inspired by entrepreneur Joy Mangano. During this period she was repeatedly listed among the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and became a fixture of awards-season coverage.
After the intense franchise-and-awards run, Lawrence took fewer roles and began reshaping her career. She starred in Mother!, Red Sparrow, Don't Look Up, Causeway, and No Hard Feelings, moving between auteur provocation, spy thriller, satire, quiet trauma drama, and broad comedy. She also co-founded the production company Excellent Cadaver, producing or helping develop projects including Causeway, the documentary Bread & Roses, and later films. Lawrence has used her platform for political reform advocacy, particularly through RepresentUs, while generally keeping the focus of her screen biography on work rather than private life. Her career remains notable for how quickly she moved from regional independent realism to franchise leadership, Oscar-winning prestige, and producer-driven control over material.
