Dee Wallace

Dee Wallace is an American actress, acting teacher and author whose career is closely associated with horror, science fiction and emotionally grounded genre filmmaking. She was born Deanna Bowers in Kansas City, Kansas, on 14 December 1948. Before becoming a screen actor, she studied education and drama and worked as a teacher and dancer. That background helps explain one of the qualities that has made her durable on screen: even in frightening or heightened stories, she often plays characters with direct emotional accessibility.

Wallace worked in television and small film roles in the 1970s before becoming a recognizable figure in American horror. She appeared in The Stepford Wives and then took a lead role in Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes, playing a young woman caught in a brutal desert survival story. In 1981 she starred as Karen White in Joe Dante's The Howling, a werewolf film that mixed psychological unease, media satire and special-effects transformation. The role placed her firmly within the generation of performers who helped carry late-1970s and early-1980s horror from exploitation circuits into mainstream genre culture.

Her most famous role came in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Wallace played Mary, the single mother of Elliott, Gertie and Michael. The performance is not a monster-movie lead but a domestic anchor: she gives the film its sense of a stressed, loving household whose children are living through something miraculous just outside adult perception. E.T. became one of the most successful and beloved films in cinema history, and Wallace's warm, anxious, lightly comic performance remains central to its family perspective.
