Tim Burton

Burton's involvement with The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he conceived and produced, extended his influence into stop-motion animation. Although Henry Selick directed the film, its characters and world grew from Burton's story and designs, and it remains closely identified with his imagination. He later directed Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie in stop-motion, returning to handmade animation as a central part of his artistic identity.

His filmography also includes Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Dumbo and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. These projects vary widely in reception, but they show a recurring interest in artificial worlds, theatrical outsiders and the boundary between childhood fantasy and adult melancholy. Big Fish and Ed Wood are often cited as examples of Burton applying his style to more openly emotional or biographical material.

Burton has also worked as a producer and television creative force. His association with Wednesday brought his visual sensibility to streaming television and introduced his gothic-comic instincts to a new audience. Over decades, his name has become an adjective: “Burtonesque” suggests black-and-white stripes, spindly figures, haunted carnivals, pale protagonists and the comic sadness of people who do not fit their surroundings. At his best, Burton turns outsider identity into popular myth.
