Lena Headey is an English actor best known internationally for playing Cersei Lannister on HBO's Game of Thrones, a role that made her one of the defining screen villains of 2010s television. Born Lena Kathren Headey on 3 October 1973 in Hamilton, Bermuda, she grew up in England and began acting as a teenager. Her early screen work placed her quickly in period drama and adventure films: Waterland brought one of her first major film appearances, and Disney's 1994 version of The Jungle Book introduced her to a wider family audience as Katherine Brydon.
Headey built a varied career before her global breakthrough, moving between British independent films, genre pieces, romantic comedy and American studio productions. She appeared in The Remains of the Day, Mrs Dalloway, Onegin, Possession and Ripley's Game, then reached a new commercial audience as Queen Gorgo in Zack Snyder's 300. Around the same period she gave one of her most warmly remembered lead performances opposite Piper Perabo in Imagine Me & You, a romantic comedy that became a lasting favorite with LGBTQ audiences. She later returned as Gorgo in 300: Rise of an Empire.
On television, Headey's largest pre-Game of Thrones role was Sarah Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which reworked the Terminator film mythology for network television and let her carry an action-drama series. The part also pointed toward a strength that later became central to her career: playing characters who combine toughness, fear, political calculation and emotional damage without softening them into easy sympathy.

Game of Thrones transformed Headey's public profile. As Cersei Lannister, she played a queen, mother and political survivor whose cruelty was often rooted in fear, humiliation and a lifelong awareness of how power worked around her. The performance was unusually controlled: Headey used stillness, glances and clipped delivery as weapons, especially in later seasons as Cersei became more isolated and more dangerous. The role earned repeated Primetime Emmy Award nominations and Screen Actors Guild recognition with the ensemble, and it remains the performance most associated with her name.
Alongside that signature role, Headey continued to work across film and television. She played the Sandin family's mother in the original The Purge, the gang leader Ma-Ma in Dredd, Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and wrestler Paige's mother Julia Knight in Fighting with My Family. She also worked in animation and voice roles, including projects connected to Trollhunters and Masters of the Universe. Her later screen work includes Gunpowder Milkshake and the western series The Abandons.
Headey's career is marked less by a single genre than by a willingness to move between prestige television, cult science fiction, fantasy, action and independent drama. Her most famous characters are often formidable women operating in violent or patriarchal worlds, but her best performances avoid simple hardness; they are built from restraint, irony and a sense of private cost. That range has made her a durable presence in both British and American screen acting.
