Lin Shaye is an American actor with a long screen career spanning horror, comedy and independent film. Born in Detroit, Michigan, and educated at the University of Michigan, she began appearing in film and television in the 1970s and built a reputation as a versatile character performer. Her early and mid-career credits include appearances in films such as Alone in the Dark, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Critters and Critters 2, placing her in several widely remembered genre titles before horror became the area most associated with her public image.
Shaye also became familiar to mainstream comedy audiences through repeated work in films connected with the Farrelly brothers and related broad-comedy circles. Her credits include Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary, Detroit Rock City, Me, Myself & Irene, Stuck on You and The Three Stooges. Those roles often used her precision as a character actor: she could make brief appearances memorable without needing to dominate the plot, and she moved easily between eccentric comedy, deadpan reactions and heightened physical humor.
Her most widely recognized later role is Elise Rainier in the Insidious film series. Beginning with Insidious in 2010, Shaye’s performance as the paranormal investigator gave the franchise an emotional center and turned a supporting figure into one of its signature characters. She returned for Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, Insidious: The Red Door and later franchise entries. The role renewed attention to her earlier horror work and contributed to her frequent description as a modern “scream queen,” though her career is broader than that label suggests.
