He continued that run with Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, Youth in Revolt, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim, directed by Edgar Wright, initially had a mixed box-office outcome but grew into a cult favorite, with Cera's performance as a Canadian bass player and reluctant action hero anchoring the film's video-game and comic-book stylization. Cera later reprised the role in the animated Netflix series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, reuniting much of the original cast and underscoring the lasting affection for the project.

Cera has also made a point of taking smaller, stranger, and more abrasive roles than his early image suggested. He appeared as a heightened version of himself in This Is the End, played supporting dramatic or offbeat parts in Person to Person, Gloria Bell, Molly's Game, Dream Scenario, and Barbie, and lent his voice to animated projects such as The Lego Batman Movie, Sausage Party, Paws of Fury, and The Berenstain Bears. His role as Allan in Barbie introduced him to a new mass audience while fitting his long-standing talent for playing characters who seem slightly out of sync with the world around them.

Alongside film and television, Cera has built a notable stage career. He appeared on Broadway in Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth, Lobby Hero, and The Waverly Gallery, earning a Tony Award nomination for Lobby Hero. Those stage roles strengthened his reputation as more than a film-comedy specialist, showing an actor comfortable with ensemble drama, long-form dialogue, and characters whose passivity can conceal sharp emotional conflict.

Cera's music work has remained lower-key but consistent with his independent sensibility. He released the album True That in 2014 and has played bass with the indie-rock group Mister Heavenly. Rather than pursuing celebrity on conventional terms, he has tended to choose projects that preserve a sense of privacy and idiosyncrasy. Over time, that selectiveness has helped keep his career from being frozen in the teen-comedy moment that made him famous. Cera's most durable contribution is a comic style that makes hesitation expressive: he turns pauses, stammers, and tiny shifts in posture into character, and he has carried that precision from cult television to studio hits, independent film, voice work, music, and Broadway.
