Adrien Brody is an American actor known for intense, physically committed performances in independent films, studio pictures, television, and stage work. Born Adrien Nicholas Brody on April 14, 1973, in New York City, he grew up in Queens, the son of photographer Sylvia Plachy and history professor and painter Elliot Brody. He studied at New York performing-arts schools and began acting young, including a PBS television film as a teenager. His early career moved through independent and prestige projects such as King of the Hill, Bullet, The Thin Red Line, Summer of Sam, and Restaurant, gradually establishing him as an actor drawn to inward, difficult, or displaced characters.
Brody's career changed decisively with Roman Polanski's The Pianist. Playing Polish Jewish musician Władysław Szpilman, he prepared with a famously rigorous physical and musical transformation, and the performance won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. At 29, he became the youngest winner of that Oscar category, and he also won a César Award. The role gave Brody an international profile and fixed one part of his screen identity: he was an actor willing to strip away vanity and build a character around fear, hunger, endurance, and silence.
After The Pianist, Brody moved between large-scale entertainment and auteur-driven work. He starred in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, Peter Jackson's King Kong, Hollywoodland, Cadillac Records, Splice, Predators, Detachment, and Blonde. He also became a recurring collaborator of Wes Anderson, appearing in The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City. In those films he often used a more stylized, comic, or brittle register, showing that his talents extended beyond solemn drama.

On television, Brody played Harry Houdini in the History miniseries Houdini, earning an Emmy nomination, appeared as Luca Changretta in Peaky Blinders, played investor Josh Aaronson in Succession, and portrayed basketball executive Pat Riley in HBO's Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. His later stage work included a London role in The Fear of 13. Brody received renewed awards attention for The Brutalist, in which he played architect László Tóth; the role brought major critics' prizes and another wave of recognition. Across his career, he has remained difficult to typecast: sometimes a haunted survivor, sometimes an eccentric supporting player, sometimes a leading man in genre film, and often an actor whose angular presence makes alienation visible on screen.
