Bobby Cannavale

On film, Cannavale has been a steady presence in both independent dramas and major studio releases. Early critical attention came with The Station Agent, where his openhearted performance as Joe Oramas contrasted beautifully with the film’s quiet melancholy. He went on to appear in Win Win, Blue Jasmine, Chef, Spy, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, I, Tonya, Motherless Brooklyn, The Irishman, Blonde and Ezra. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe he played Jim Paxton in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, bringing a comic, regular-guy energy to the superhero series.

Cannavale is also a significant stage actor. He made his Broadway debut in Mauritius and earned a Tony Award nomination for best featured actor in a play. He later received a Tony nomination for best actor in a play for The Motherfucker with the Hat and appeared in the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross. That stage grounding is visible in his screen work: he can be expansive and volatile without losing control of a scene.

Across media, Cannavale’s strength is his ability to make supporting characters feel fully inhabited. Whether he is playing a neighbor, detective, gangster, father, romantic lead or comic antagonist, he brings physical presence, humor and emotional immediacy. His awards history reflects that breadth, but his larger reputation rests on reliability: he makes ensembles livelier, darker or funnier simply by entering them.
