Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is an American actor, producer, and director widely regarded as one of the central screen and stage performers of his generation. Born Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, he studied at Fordham University and trained at the American Conservatory Theater. He began in theater and television before becoming nationally recognized through the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere and early film roles including A Soldier's Story.

Washington's film career accelerated in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Glory, playing a formerly enslaved soldier in the American Civil War. He then delivered one of his defining performances as Malcolm X in Spike Lee's biographical epic, a role that brought an Academy Award nomination and remains a benchmark for screen biography. Films such as The Pelican Brief, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, Devil in a Blue Dress, He Got Game, The Hurricane, and Remember the Titans showed his ability to command legal thrillers, social drama, sports films, and character-led studio pictures.

In 2001 Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Training Day, playing corrupt detective Alonzo Harris. The award made him one of the few Black actors to win the lead-acting Oscar and confirmed a career that had already combined movie-star authority with classical technique. He continued to lead major films including Man on Fire, Inside Man, American Gangster, The Book of Eli, Flight, The Equalizer series, The Magnificent Seven, Roman J. Israel, Esq., The Tragedy of Macbeth, Gladiator II, and Highest 2 Lowest.
