Bruce Greenwood

Bruce Greenwood is a Canadian actor and producer whose career spans Canadian art cinema, Hollywood studio films, television drama, animation, and voice work. Born Stuart Bruce Greenwood in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, in 1956, he has often been cast as men of authority: presidents, doctors, commanders, executives, fathers, and institutional figures. His best performances complicate that authority, adding unease, grief, charm, or menace to roles that might otherwise function only as exposition.

Greenwood’s early screen work developed through Canadian and American television before he became widely visible in series such as St. Elsewhere and Nowhere Man. His long collaboration with Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan proved especially important. In The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, Ararat, and other Egoyan projects, Greenwood became part of a cinema concerned with memory, trauma, secrecy, and moral ambiguity. The Sweet Hereafter in particular gave him a major critical platform and brought Canadian Screen Award recognition.

In mainstream film, Greenwood is frequently associated with public authority. His portrayal of John F. Kennedy in Thirteen Days remains one of his best-known roles, and he later played fictional U.S. presidents in National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He also appeared in Double Jeopardy, I, Robot, Capote, Déjà Vu, I’m Not There, Meek’s Cutoff, Flight, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Post, Doctor Sleep, and Gerald’s Game. In each, he brought a composed surface that could read as trustworthy, withholding, or dangerous depending on the story.
