Kate Beckinsale

Kathrin Romany Beckinsale is an English actress whose career has ranged from British literary adaptations to Hollywood action films, romantic comedy, television drama and independent cinema. Born in London on July 26, 1973, she is the daughter of actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe. She appeared on television as a child and later studied French and Russian literature at Oxford while beginning a professional acting career.

Beckinsale’s early screen identity was strongly connected to period drama and literary adaptation. She made her theatrical film debut in Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing in 1993 and followed it with roles in Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Haunted, Emma and The Golden Bowl. These performances established her as a poised, literate screen presence with a facility for comedy of manners and historical settings.

Her international profile grew in the early 2000s with Pearl Harbor and Serendipity, two very different Hollywood vehicles that introduced her to a much wider audience. She then took on more genre-oriented work, most significantly the role of Selene in Underworld.
