Jude Law

Law later shifted toward a more varied character-actor phase. He played Dr. John Watson opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, bringing wit and exasperated loyalty to a blockbuster version of the partnership. He appeared in Contagion, Hugo, Anna Karenina, Side Effects, Dom Hemingway, Spy, Genius, The Young Pope, The New Pope, Captain Marvel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Firebrand, and The Order. These projects show a performer increasingly willing to complicate his earlier image with vanity, anger, absurdity, or moral decay.

His television work with Paolo Sorrentino in The Young Pope became one of his most distinctive later roles. As Lenny Belardo, Pope Pius XIII, Law was severe, theatrical, wounded, and magnetic, carrying a surreal religious drama through stillness and contradiction. In the Fantastic Beasts films he played a younger Albus Dumbledore, inheriting a beloved literary character while emphasizing restraint and private regret rather than grand eccentricity.

Law's career has endured because he adapted. He began as a striking young stage-and-screen actor, became a major star, and then turned that image into material for stranger and more mature performances. From The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain to Sherlock Holmes, The Young Pope, and Firebrand, his best work is built on tension between elegance and unease.
