Noomi Rapace is a Swedish actress whose career moved from Scandinavian film and television into international cinema after her performance as Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium novels. Born Hilda Noomi Norén in Hudiksvall, Sweden, she spent part of her childhood in Iceland and made an early screen appearance in the Icelandic film In the Shadow of the Raven. She later studied acting in Sweden and worked in theatre and television before gaining major film recognition.
Rapace first attracted wide critical attention for Daisy Diamond, in which she played a young mother under severe emotional pressure and won major Danish acting awards. Her international breakthrough came in 2009 with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. Her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander brought awards and nominations in Europe and abroad, including Guldbagge and Satellite recognition and nominations from BAFTA and other bodies. The role established her as a physically committed performer able to carry dark, psychologically demanding material.
After the Millennium films, Rapace moved into English-language and international productions. She appeared as Madame Simza Heron in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and played scientist Elizabeth Shaw in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, later reprising the character in connection with Alien: Covenant. Her subsequent credits include Dead Man Down, The Drop, Child 44, Unlocked, What Happened to Monday, Bright, Close, Angel of Mine, The Secrets We Keep, Lamb, Black Crab, Django and Constellation. She has often alternated between action-oriented roles, psychological thrillers, science fiction and European art-house projects.
