Michael Shannon

Shannon has had one of his most durable creative relationships with director Jeff Nichols. Beginning with Shotgun Stories, he appeared in Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, Loving and The Bikeriders. Take Shelter, in particular, used Shannon's ability to make psychological distress feel both intimate and epic, casting him as a husband and father haunted by apocalyptic visions. At the same time, Shannon moved easily into larger commercial work, playing General Zod in Man of Steel and The Flash, and appearing in films such as The Iceman, The Shape of Water, Knives Out, Bullet Train and Nuremberg.

On television, Shannon became widely known as Nelson Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire, a severe federal agent whose moral rigidity curdles under pressure. He later appeared in Nine Perfect Strangers and earned Emmy attention for playing country singer George Jones opposite Jessica Chastain in George & Tammy. His Broadway work includes Grace and a revival of Long Day's Journey into Night, the latter earning a Tony Award nomination. Shannon is also a musician with the band Corporal, reflecting a career that has never been limited to one medium. Across film, television and stage, his signature is not just intensity but precision: he makes instability legible, and he often finds wounded humor inside forbidding characters.
