Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner is an American actor, director, producer, and musician whose career has been closely associated with American myth, sports stories, westerns, political drama, and middle-American leading-man roles. Born Kevin Michael Costner on 18 January 1955 in Lynwood, California, he grew up in several California communities as his father's work moved the family. He graduated from California State University, Fullerton, and became seriously interested in acting around the end of college. After taking acting classes and working ordinary jobs, he slowly moved into film work, building a career that combined classic star presence with an unusually strong interest in directing and producing.

Costner's early film years included small appearances and near-misses before Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado gave him a notable breakout role in 1985. He then moved quickly into leading-man status with The Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams. Those films helped define his screen image: controlled, earnest, athletic, and often tied to ideals of loyalty, justice, memory, and American landscape. Bull Durham and Field of Dreams made him especially important to the modern baseball film, while The Untouchables and No Way Out showed he could anchor mainstream thrillers.
