Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas is an American actor and producer whose career has moved between prestige drama, mainstream thrillers, television, and producing. Born Michael Kirk Douglas on September 25, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he is the son of actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill. He studied drama at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and came of age professionally with a mix of stage, television, and film work before becoming one of the defining Hollywood leading men of the 1980s and 1990s.

Douglas first became widely known to television audiences as Inspector Steve Keller on The Streets of San Francisco, starring opposite Karl Malden. The series gave him national exposure and Emmy recognition, but his most consequential early achievement came as a producer. After acquiring the screen rights to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest from his father, Douglas produced the 1975 film with Saul Zaentz. The movie became a landmark of 1970s American cinema and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, giving Douglas an Oscar as a producer before he had become a top-billed film star.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Douglas consolidated two identities: socially alert producer and charismatic leading man. He produced and starred in The China Syndrome, a nuclear-power thriller released the same year as the Three Mile Island accident, and later found major popular success with Romancing the Stone and its sequel The Jewel of the Nile. His performances in Fatal Attraction, Wall Street, The War of the Roses, Basic Instinct, Falling Down, The Game, and Traffic helped define his screen image: intelligent, controlled, often morally pressured men whose confidence can turn brittle under stress.
