Karan Kumar Johar is an Indian filmmaker, producer, television host and media personality who has been one of the defining figures in mainstream Hindi cinema since the late 1990s. Born in Mumbai on May 25, 1972, he is the son of producer Yash Johar and became closely identified with Dharma Productions, the family studio that he later led into a major contemporary film brand. Johar’s public image combines several roles: director of glossy ensemble melodramas, producer of commercial and prestige films, talk-show host, talent mentor and cultural commentator.
Johar’s directorial breakthrough came with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. The film’s mixture of college romance, family feeling, music and star power established many of the traits associated with his early cinema and won major Indian film awards, including Filmfare recognition for direction and screenplay. He followed it with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a large-scale family drama that became a major domestic and overseas success, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which took his interest in relationships and family expectations into more adult territory. My Name Is Khan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, marked a more socially conscious turn and earned Johar another Filmfare directing award.
As head of Dharma Productions, Johar expanded his influence beyond the films he personally directed. The company has produced and distributed a broad slate that includes romantic dramas, comedies, action films, thrillers and biographical projects. Among its notable productions are Raazi, Shershaah, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, the last of which also marked Johar’s return to directing after a long gap. His production work has helped launch or consolidate the careers of actors, directors and writers, making him a major institutional figure as well as an individual celebrity.

Johar is also known for Koffee with Karan, the long-running celebrity talk show he has hosted since 2004. The program made him a familiar television presence and turned industry conversation, publicity and star image into part of his own career. In 2020, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts. Across directing, producing and hosting, Johar’s career reflects both the glamour and the industrial machinery of modern Bollywood.
