Jodie Foster is an American actor, director, and producer whose career spans child stardom, landmark adult performances, prestige directing, and award-winning television work. Born Alicia Christian Foster in Los Angeles in 1962, she began appearing on screen as a very young child, first in advertising and then in television. By the 1970s she had become one of the rare child actors trusted with complex dramatic material as well as family-oriented studio projects.
Foster's early film career included Disney titles such as Napoleon and Samantha and Freaky Friday, but her defining adolescent role was Iris in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Playing a young sex worker opposite Robert De Niro, she gave a performance whose control and seriousness brought her an Academy Award nomination while she was still a teenager. She continued acting through adolescence in films including Bugsy Malone and Foxes, then made the unusual decision to attend Yale University, graduating before fully reestablishing herself as an adult star.
Her transition to adult roles was confirmed by The Accused, in which she played Sarah Tobias, a rape survivor fighting a hostile legal and social system. The performance won Foster her first Academy Award for Best Actress. Three years later she won a second for The Silence of the Lambs, where her Clarice Starling became one of modern cinema's most enduring investigators: intelligent, disciplined, vulnerable, and morally centered while facing institutional sexism and psychological danger. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Foster's work became a benchmark for screen acting in thrillers.

Foster's acting career after that point balanced mainstream thrillers, intimate dramas, and occasional science fiction. She starred in Sommersby, Maverick, Nell, Contact, Panic Room, Inside Man, The Brave One, Carnage, Elysium, and Hotel Artemis, among others. Nell brought another Oscar nomination, while Contact made strong use of her ability to play intellectual intensity without losing emotional warmth. Later, Nyad returned her to awards contention with a supporting performance grounded in loyalty, friction, and endurance.
As a filmmaker, Foster began directing features with Little Man Tate, followed by Home for the Holidays, The Beaver, and Money Monster. She also became an accomplished television director, working on series such as Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, Black Mirror, and Tales from the Loop. Her directing often favors actors under pressure inside families, institutions, or media systems, a perspective that echoes her long experience inside the industry.
In the 2020s Foster added another major chapter with True Detective: Night Country, playing Alaska police chief Liz Danvers. The performance won major television awards and demonstrated that her screen authority had only deepened with age. Across more than six decades of work, Foster has remained unusually self-possessed: a performer associated with intelligence, guarded emotion, and precision, and a filmmaker who has built a career on longevity rather than nostalgia.
