Emile Hirsch

Emile Hirsch is an American actor known for intense, physically committed performances in independent dramas, studio genre films, and ensemble projects. Born in Los Angeles in 1985 and raised partly in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Hirsch began acting on television as a child and teenager before moving quickly into film. His early credits included guest appearances and television movies, followed by feature roles that made him part of a generation of young actors who emerged in the early 2000s.

Hirsch's first major film period included The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, The Emperor's Club, The Girl Next Door, Imaginary Heroes, Lords of Dogtown, and Alpha Dog. These roles often cast him as restless or rebellious young men, and they allowed him to move between comedy, coming-of-age drama, and darker crime material. Lords of Dogtown, in which he played skateboarder Jay Adams, helped establish the physical energy that later became associated with his work.

His signature role arrived with Sean Penn's Into the Wild. Playing Christopher McCandless, Hirsch carried a film built around idealism, isolation, risk, and self-invention. The role required a dramatic physical transformation and a performance that could make McCandless both charismatic and troubling. Into the Wild earned Hirsch major critical attention and a Screen Actors Guild nomination, and it remains the performance most closely associated with his name.

After Into the Wild, Hirsch moved between large-scale and independent productions. He played the title role in the Wachowskis' brightly stylized Speed Racer, portrayed activist Cleve Jones in Gus Van Sant's Milk, appeared in Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock, and worked with William Friedkin on Killer Joe. He later appeared in Lone Survivor, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which he played hair stylist Jay Sebring.
