Biography
Melissa McCarthy is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose career moved from improvisational comedy and supporting television work to major film stardom. Born in Plainfield, Illinois, in 1970, she grew up in the Chicago area and later trained and performed in comedy, including work with the Los Angeles improvisational company The Groundlings. That background shaped a screen style built on precision timing, physical confidence, and a willingness to make comic characters both outrageous and emotionally legible.
McCarthy's early career included stand-up, small film parts, and guest television work before she became widely known as Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls. The role introduced her to a broad television audience as a warm, fast-talking comic presence. She later appeared in Samantha Who? and then took the lead role of Molly Flynn on the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Her film breakthrough came with Bridesmaids in 2011. Playing Megan, McCarthy turned what could have been a broad supporting part into one of the film's defining performances, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The success opened a run of studio comedies in which she often carried or co-carried the film, including Identity Thief, The Heat, Tammy, Spy, The Boss, and Life of the Party. In many of those projects she blended slapstick and improvisational looseness with characters who were stubborn, wounded, or underestimated.
