Biography
Jet Li is a Chinese-born martial artist, actor, film producer, and philanthropist whose screen career helped carry Chinese martial-arts cinema to global audiences. Born Li Lianjie in Beijing on April 26, 1963, he trained in wushu from childhood and became a member of the Beijing Wushu Team. Before acting, he was already a nationally celebrated athlete, winning multiple all-around Chinese wushu championships during the 1970s and performing internationally as part of Chinese martial-arts delegations.
Li's transition from athlete to film star began with Shaolin Temple in 1982. The film was a major success in mainland China and made his athletic precision, speed, and calm screen presence instantly recognizable. Sequels and related martial-arts films followed, but his most important early-1990s breakthrough came in Hong Kong cinema, especially through the Once Upon a Time in China series, in which he played the folk hero Wong Fei-hung. Those films helped revive period kung fu cinema and positioned Li as one of the major action stars of the era.
Through the 1990s, Li's Asian filmography combined historical legend, modern action, and stylized martial artistry. Fong Sai-yuk, Tai Chi Master, Fist of Legend, The Bodyguard from Beijing, Black Mask, and other films showed different sides of his persona: disciplined hero, playful fighter, tragic patriot, and sleek contemporary action lead. Fist of Legend in particular became internationally admired for its choreography and for Li's performance as Chen Zhen, a role previously associated with Bruce Lee.
