Anthony Wong Chau-sang is a Hong Kong actor, singer and occasional director whose career has spanned crime thrillers, action cinema, television drama and independent film. Born Anthony William Perry in British Hong Kong in 1961, he later trained through Asia Television and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and also studied with Philippe Gaulier in France. Wong became known for forceful, unsentimental screen performances and for a willingness to move between mainstream commercial films, Category III exploitation cinema, arthouse projects and supporting roles in international productions.
Wong emerged during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period in which Hong Kong cinema was internationally visible and highly productive. His early prominence was boosted by roles in films such as Hard Boiled, The Heroic Trio and The Untold Story. The Untold Story brought him a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor, and it helped establish the intense screen persona that would follow him through much of the decade. He continued to appear prolifically, including in Johnnie To's The Mission and in the Young and Dangerous cycle, while also taking parts in films such as The Medallion and The Painted Veil.
His work in the 2000s and after broadened his reputation beyond villainous or volatile characters. He appeared in Infernal Affairs and its sequels, winning major supporting-actor recognition for the first film, and later played in the Hollywood sequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Wong also worked in television, winning the TVB Anniversary Award for Lord of Shanghai. In the late 2010s and 2020s, he received renewed attention for humane leading roles in Still Human and The Sunny Side of the Street, winning major best-actor prizes for both. His later credits also include The Sleep Curse, The Sunny Side of the Street, Valley of the Shadow of Death and other Hong Kong and international productions.
