William Shatner

William Shatner is a Canadian actor, author, director, producer, recording artist, and television personality. Born on March 22, 1931, in Montreal, Quebec, he studied at McGill University before beginning a long stage and screen career in Canada and the United States. His early work included Canadian theatre and television, Shakespearean performance, and guest roles on American anthology and drama series.

Shatner became internationally famous as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek. He first played Kirk in the original television series, which aired from 1966 to 1969, and later returned for Star Trek: The Animated Series and the first seven Star Trek feature films, ending his original film run with Star Trek Generations. The role made him one of science fiction television's most recognizable performers and kept him connected to conventions, documentaries, books, and later franchise retrospectives for decades.

Outside Star Trek, Shatner maintained a broad television career. He starred as the title police officer in T. J. Hooker, hosted the emergency-response series Rescue 911, and made notable appearances in Columbo, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and other television productions. In the 2000s he found a second major signature role as attorney Denny Crane, first on The Practice and then on Boston Legal. That role earned him Emmy recognition and introduced him to a new generation as a comic dramatic performer rather than only a science-fiction icon.

Shatner has also written and co-written books, including memoirs, Star Trek-related nonfiction, and science-fiction novels such as the TekWar series. His recording career, beginning with The Transformed Man, became known for spoken-word interpretations of popular songs, and later albums leaned into that distinctive style. He has directed documentaries and appeared as himself in projects exploring Star Trek, celebrity, aviation, space, and unusual phenomena.
