Kappei Yamaguchi is a Japanese actor, voice actor and rakugo performer whose bright, agile vocal style has made him one of the most recognizable performers in anime. Born Mitsuo Yamaguchi in Fukuoka, Japan, he built his career in theater and voice work after moving toward performance training in Tokyo. His professional name became closely associated with energetic young heroes, comic leads and sharp-edged supporting characters, and his long-running roles have kept him active across television animation, theatrical films, games and dubbing.
Yamaguchi's breakthrough came in 1989 when he voiced the male form of Ranma Saotome in the anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2. The part required quick comic timing, physicality conveyed entirely through voice, and the ability to play both bravado and embarrassment inside a farcical martial-arts premise. That early success connected him to a generation of fans and established a template for much of his later work: youthful, expressive characters who could move rapidly between comedy, action and sincerity.
He soon became a fixture in several internationally known series. In InuYasha, another Takahashi adaptation, he voiced the title character, a half-demon whose gruffness, vulnerability and romantic awkwardness helped anchor the fantasy adventure. In Detective Conan, released in English as Case Closed, he became associated with Shinichi Kudo and Kaito Kid/Kaito Kuroba, roles that depend on confidence, wit and a detective-story sense of performance. He also voiced Usopp in One Piece, giving the long-running pirate adventure one of its central comic and emotional voices. These roles, along with parts such as L in Death Note and Feitan in Hunter x Hunter, made Yamaguchi a constant presence in anime distributed far beyond Japan.

Yamaguchi's career has also extended into film versions, specials and newer revivals connected to his signature franchises. The Movie Database and other filmographies list repeated appearances in Detective Conan films and specials, as well as returns to Ranma-related material. His work illustrates how Japanese voice performers often sustain characters over decades, carrying them through television seasons, theatrical releases, video games and anniversary projects while adapting to new casts and production styles.
Although best known internationally for anime, Yamaguchi's background includes stage work and rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comic storytelling. That theatrical grounding is visible in the precision of his performances: the clarity of a punch line, the snap of a reaction, and the ability to make stylized characters feel emotionally readable. His children, including voice actors Ryunosuke Yamaguchi and Akane Yamaguchi, have also worked in performance, making the Yamaguchi name part of a wider voice-acting family context.
Across more than three decades, Kappei Yamaguchi's reputation rests less on a single role than on an unusually durable cluster of iconic characters. Ranma, Inuyasha, Usopp, Shinichi Kudo, Kaito Kid and L each occupy a different corner of popular anime, but together they show a performer comfortable with slapstick, mystery, action, fantasy and psychological tension. His career remains a useful map of modern Japanese voice acting: theater-trained, franchise-spanning, and deeply tied to characters that audiences continue to revisit.
