Biography
Christopher McDonald is an American actor known for bringing polished confidence, comic arrogance, and sharp supporting energy to film and television roles across more than four decades. Born on February 15, 1955, in Waterloo, New York, and raised in the state, he studied at Hobart College, where he was active in athletics before pursuing acting. His screen career began around the turn of the 1980s, and he has since built an unusually long filmography that ranges from teen musicals and studio comedies to prestige dramas, television procedurals, animation, and streaming comedy.
McDonald first reached wide film audiences as Goose McKenzie in Grease 2, but the role that fixed him in popular culture came later: Shooter McGavin, the smug professional golfer and rival to Adam Sandler's title character in Happy Gilmore. Shooter became a durable comic villain because McDonald played him with full dramatic conviction rather than treating him as a sketch. The performance has remained his signature role, and he reprised Shooter in Happy Gilmore 2.
Long before and after Happy Gilmore, McDonald worked steadily as a character actor. His film credits include The Boys Next Door, Outrageous Fortune, Thelma & Louise, Grumpy Old Men, Quiz Show, The Tuskegee Airmen, Celtic Pride, Flubber, The Faculty, The Iron Giant, Requiem for a Dream, 61*, Rumor Has It, The House Bunny, About Last Night, Rosaline, and many independent features. The range of those titles suggests why he remained employable: he could play affable authority, venal businessmen, slick husbands, media figures, fathers, coaches, and villains without being locked into only one tone.
