Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgn, born Vishal Virender Devgan in New Delhi on 2 April 1969, is one of Hindi cinema's most durable leading men. He entered the film industry from a family already connected to production and action cinema: his father, Veeru Devgan, was a prominent stunt choreographer and action director, and his mother, Veena Devgan, was a producer. Devgn studied in Mumbai and adopted the screen name Ajay as he began acting professionally. That background helped shape a star image rooted in physical confidence, but his long career has depended just as much on restraint, intensity and a willingness to move between commercial and dramatic registers.

His debut, Phool Aur Kaante, immediately defined him as an action star. The film's motorcycle-split entrance became one of 1990s Hindi cinema's best-known star introductions, and Devgn won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Through the decade he worked in action, romance and melodrama, with commercially visible films such as Jigar, Vijaypath, Dilwale, Suhaag, Ishq, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The same period also showed his dramatic range, especially in Mahesh Bhatt's Zakhm, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. Unlike many stars introduced through action spectacle, Devgn developed a reputation for low-key intensity rather than flamboyance.

In the 2000s Devgn deepened his reputation as a serious performer. Company, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Gangaajal, Khakee, Raincoat, Apaharan and Omkara placed him in crime dramas, political stories and literary adaptations. His portrayal of Bhagat Singh brought another National Film Award and confirmed that he could carry patriotic drama without relying only on action-star mannerisms. Omkara, Vishal Bhardwaj's adaptation of Othello, remains among his most respected performances, using Devgn's reserve to suggest authority, insecurity and menace. During this period he also showed an ability to serve ensemble stories, not just vehicles built around him.
