Samuthirakani

P. Samuthirakani is an Indian actor and film director known primarily for work in Tamil cinema, with substantial roles in Telugu and Malayalam films as well. Born in Seithur, Tamil Nadu, in 1973, he studied mathematics and law before pursuing the film career he had wanted despite early discouragement. His eventual screen identity has combined socially conscious direction, character acting and frequent portrayals of stern, principled or emotionally grounded men.

Samuthirakani entered the industry through direction rather than stardom. He worked as an assistant director under Sundar K. Vijayan and later came under the influence of K. Balachander, one of Tamil cinema's major writer-directors. Assisting on film and television projects gave him practical grounding before he began directing features. His early directing work included Unnai Charanadaindhen, but his major breakthrough as a director came with Naadodigal in 2009, a friendship drama whose success led to remakes and expanded his standing as a filmmaker.

As a director, Samuthirakani has often returned to themes of responsibility, education, social inequality and moral choice. Films such as Poraali, Nimirndhu Nil, Appa, Naadodigal 2 and Vinodhaya Sitham reflect his interest in stories built around personal ethics and social consequences. Vinodhaya Sitham later became the basis for Bro, a Telugu fantasy comedy-drama that he directed with Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej, showing his movement across regional industries.

His acting career developed in parallel and eventually made him a familiar presence to audiences beyond Tamil cinema. He earned attention for Subramaniapuram and played memorable roles in Saattai, Velaiilla Pattadhari, Visaranai, Kaala, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Bheemla Nayak, Thunivu, Siren and Hanu-Man. In Visaranai, his performance as a police officer brought national recognition when he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. That award confirmed him as more than a director who acted; it placed him among respected Indian character performers.
