Simon Yam Tat-wah is a Hong Kong actor, producer and director whose long career has made him one of the most recognizable faces in modern Hong Kong cinema. Born in British Hong Kong on March 19, 1955, Yam first worked as a model before moving into television and film. By the late 1970s and 1980s he had become a prolific screen presence, appearing across crime stories, melodramas, action pictures and television serials. His range, physical composure and willingness to move between leading, supporting and villainous roles helped him remain active through multiple eras of the Hong Kong film industry.
Yam began building his filmography at a time when Hong Kong cinema was fast-moving, genre-driven and internationally influential. Early work in television with TVB gave him a foundation in regular performance, while his film roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s often drew on his calm intensity. He appeared in action and crime films such as Tiger Cage, Bullet in the Head and Full Contact, where he could project charm, menace or authority with minimal overstatement. In the Young and Dangerous series, he played Chiang Tin-sung, helping connect his image to the cycle of triad films that shaped 1990s Hong Kong popular cinema.
One of Yam's most important creative associations has been with director Johnnie To and the Milkyway Image circle. In PTU, Election, Triangle and Sparrow, he became part of To's precise, morally shaded crime universe. These films used Yam's stillness and maturity especially well: he could play police officers, gang figures and men navigating codes of loyalty without turning them into simple heroes or villains. His performance in PTU won recognition at the Golden Bauhinia Awards, and Election remains among the internationally best-known Hong Kong crime films of its period.

Yam also gained wider international visibility through Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, in which he appeared opposite Angelina Jolie, and through continuing festival circulation of Hong Kong films. His credits include SPL: Sha Po Lang, Exiled, Eye in the Sky, Ip Man and Night and Fog. In Echoes of the Rainbow, a nostalgic family drama set in 1960s Hong Kong, he played a working father and won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor. That award underlined the breadth of a career sometimes associated with crime cinema but not limited to it.
Beyond acting, Yam has worked as a producer and moved into directing with a segment of the horror anthology Tales from the Dark 1. His career is notable not only for its length but for its density: he has appeared in a very large number of productions while maintaining a clear screen identity. He often brings elegance and restraint to genre material, making him a useful anchor in stories built around violence, corruption, family pressure or urban professionalism.
Yam's public image has also included modeling, fashion and a reputation for cosmopolitan polish. In 2019 he was attacked and stabbed during a promotional appearance in Zhongshan, China; reports stated that he sustained non-life-threatening injuries and recovered after medical treatment. He continued working afterward. Across decades of Hong Kong and Chinese-language filmmaking, Yam's career reflects both the industrial productivity of the local star system and the durability of performers able to adapt as the market shifted from television studios and local genre cycles to international co-productions and mainland-backed productions.
