Tsui Hark is a Hong Kong filmmaker, producer, writer and occasional actor whose career is closely tied to the energy and international profile of modern Hong Kong cinema. Born Tsui Man-kong in Saigon in 1951, he grew up in a Chinese family, moved through Guangzhou and Hong Kong, and later studied film in the United States before returning to Hong Kong television and then features. That combination of migrant background, formal film education and local popular-culture instinct helped shape a director who treated genre cinema as something elastic: wuxia could absorb science fiction, comedy could collide with political unease, and action scenes could be staged with an almost comic-book sense of speed and composition.
Tsui emerged during the Hong Kong New Wave with features such as The Butterfly Murders, We're Going to Eat You and Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind. The early films announced a restless stylist: technically ambitious, impatient with tidy realism, and willing to push crime, horror and martial-arts materials into stranger territory. His 1983 film Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain became a landmark for its special-effects ambition in Chinese-language fantasy cinema, and his later work kept returning to the problem of how to make traditional martial-arts spectacle feel contemporary.
In 1984 Tsui and Nansun Shi formed Film Workshop, a production company that became one of the key engines of Hong Kong popular cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. As producer, Tsui helped bring John Woo's A Better Tomorrow to audiences and supported films such as A Chinese Ghost Story, Swordsman, New Dragon Gate Inn, Iron Monkey and Black Mask. His production style was sometimes described as intensely hands-on, but the results made Film Workshop a label associated with kinetic editing, flamboyant design and a willingness to reinvent familiar stories for new audiences.

As a director, Tsui reached one of his defining peaks with Once Upon a Time in China, starring Jet Li as Wong Fei-hung. The film and its sequels mixed national history, folk-hero myth and acrobatic action into one of the signature franchises of Hong Kong's golden age. Green Snake, The Lovers and The Blade further showed his range: romantic fantasy, period melodrama and a harsh, experimental martial-arts film all shared his taste for heightened emotion and visual movement.
Tsui briefly worked in Hollywood in the late 1990s, directing the Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicles Double Team and Knock Off, before returning to Chinese-language cinema. In the 2000s and 2010s he became a major figure in Mainland-Hong Kong co-productions, with Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate and The Taking of Tiger Mountain. The Battle at Lake Changjin, which he co-directed, placed him within a new era of large-scale Chinese blockbusters. Across these phases, Tsui's importance lies less in any single genre than in his habit of treating popular film as a laboratory for rhythm, effects, mythology and reinvention.
