Charles Band

After Empire, Band founded Full Moon Entertainment, later known through Full Moon Features, which became his most enduring brand. Full Moon's best-known franchise is Puppet Master, beginning with the 1989 film about animated killer puppets. The series became a cornerstone of direct-to-video horror and led to numerous sequels, crossovers, and merchandising opportunities. Full Moon also released or developed franchises and recurring titles such as Subspecies, Trancers continuations, Dollman, Demonic Toys, and the Evil Bong series. Band's later career has often leaned into self-aware horror comedy, deliberately outrageous titles, and low-budget franchise management.

Band's directorial credits include works such as Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, Doctor Mordrid, Head of the Family, various Evil Bong films, and other Full Moon projects. As a director, he is less associated with classical polish than with speed, economy, and tone: a willingness to embrace absurd premises, miniature effects, puppetry, and horror gags that play directly to a cult audience. As a producer, he has hundreds of credits, and that volume is central to understanding his career. Band's companies functioned as factories for genre fans, delivering a steady stream of films built around monsters, props, titles, and video-box art.

His reputation is therefore double-edged but significant. Critics of the work often point to uneven budgets, formula, and sensational marketing; admirers point to his persistence, independence, and understanding of fandom long before streaming platforms made niche distribution normal. Band helped define the direct-to-video horror economy and kept a form of handmade, practical-effects-driven cult filmmaking alive across changing media markets, from theatrical exploitation to VHS, DVD, streaming, and convention culture.
