Kazuya Nakai

Kazuya Nakai is a Japanese voice actor and narrator best known internationally as the voice of Roronoa Zoro in One Piece. Born on 25 November 1967 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, he became associated with Aoni Production and built a career around forceful, grounded performances: warriors, officers, swordsmen, rivals and comic tough men whose directness often masks dry humor. His voice has become one of the most recognizable in long-running anime, partly because One Piece has kept Zoro at the center of global popular culture for decades.

Nakai’s best-known role, Zoro, began with the television anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s pirate saga. Zoro’s stoic loyalty, competitive pride and deadpan reactions make him a difficult part to sustain over a very long series, but Nakai’s performance gave the character a stable identity through comedy, action and drama. The role also led to extensive film, video-game and promotional work connected with the franchise. For many viewers outside Japan, Nakai’s voice is inseparable from the sound of modern shonen adventure.

His career extends well beyond One Piece. In Gintama, he voiced Toshiro Hijikata, the mayonnaise-loving Shinsengumi vice-chief whose severe exterior is repeatedly undercut by absurd comedy. In Samurai Champloo, he played Mugen, bringing an abrasive, improvisational quality to Shinichiro Watanabe’s Edo-period hip-hop samurai series. He has also voiced Date Masamune in the Sengoku Basara franchise, Shinjiro Aragaki in Persona 3, Mondo Owada in Danganronpa, Akitaru Obi in Fire Force and the Japanese voice of Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima.
