Tomokazu Sugita is a Japanese voice actor and author whose deep, resonant delivery and improvisational comic timing have made him one of the most recognizable male performers in modern anime and games. Born on October 11, 1980, in Ranzan, Saitama, he entered voice acting while still young and became active professionally in the late 1990s. His early path included training connected to the Japan Narration Actor Institute and work with Myuras, followed by a long association with Atomic Monkey. In 2020, after nearly two decades with Atomic Monkey, he established the agency AGRS, where he has served as representative director.
Sugita's career developed from supporting and ensemble parts into a run of major leads during the 2000s. His first leading television-anime role came as Hideki Motosuwa in Chobits, but the part that most strongly defined his public image was Gintoki Sakata in Gintama. Gintoki required a rare mix of deadpan comedy, parody, sudden emotional weight, and shonen-action intensity, and Sugita's performance became central to the long-running franchise's identity. Around the same period he voiced Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, another role built around dry narration and understated reactions, which broadened his popularity with international anime audiences.
He continued to build a varied résumé across action, comedy, fantasy, and game adaptations. His credits include Joseph Joestar in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Reisi Munakata in K, Chamber in Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Tadaomi Karasuma in Assassination Classroom, Ragna the Bloodedge in BlazBlue-related animation and games, Escanor in The Seven Deadly Sins, Gyomei Himejima in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Taro Sakamoto in Sakamoto Days. He has also remained closely associated with Gintama through theatrical releases including Gintama: The Movie, Gintama: The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya, and Gintama: The Very Final.

Sugita's reputation rests not only on a list of popular characters but also on the particular personality he brings to performances. Japanese profiles and interviews often note his low voice, his facility with ad-libbing, and his fondness for references and impressions. Those qualities fit the self-aware humor of Gintama, but they have also helped him distinguish more serious or stoic figures by giving them a specific vocal texture. His career shows the breadth of contemporary seiyu work: television anime, theatrical anime, video games, drama CDs, radio, event appearances, and agency management.
Industry recognition followed his rise. Sugita won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 3rd Seiyu Awards in 2009 and later received recognition at the Newtype x Machi Asobi Anime Awards, where his role as Chamber in Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet was also singled out through the mascot-character category. By the 2020s he was both a veteran performer and a business owner, continuing to lead new productions while remaining identified with some of the most durable anime characters of the 2000s and 2010s.
