Houko Kuwashima is a Japanese voice actress and singer known for an unusually wide range of anime, game and dubbing roles. She was born in Kanegasaki, Iwate Prefecture, on 12 December 1975. After training for voice performance, she became associated with Aoni Production, one of Japan's major talent agencies for voice actors. Her professional name is often romanized as Houko Kuwashima or Hoko Kuwashima.
Kuwashima emerged during the 1990s, a period when Japanese animation was expanding internationally and voice actors were becoming more visible to fans through radio, image songs and convention culture. One of her early signature roles was Yurika Misumaru in Martian Successor Nadesico, a science-fiction comedy that gave her a lead part combining romantic comedy, parody and space-opera emotion. She also performed songs connected with her projects, placing her within the common Japanese seiyu tradition of acting and music overlapping.
Her best-known anime work includes Sango in InuYasha, a demon slayer whose family tragedy and loyalty made her one of the long-running series' central characters. Kuwashima's performance balanced action heroine resolve with grief and warmth, helping Sango remain memorable across television episodes, films and later franchise revivals. She has also been associated with roles such as Kagura in Azumanga Daioh, Clare in Claymore, Medusa Gorgon in Soul Eater, Tomoyo Sakagami in Clannad and Isara Gunther in Valkyria Chronicles.
Kuwashima has repeatedly worked in large ensemble franchises. In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny she voiced Stella Loussier, a role shaped by trauma and battlefield manipulation. In One Piece she has voiced the Going Merry and Victoria Cindry, examples of how voice actors in long-running anime may move between human characters, comic grotesques and emotionally symbolic roles. Her game work includes major Japanese role-playing and action titles, and she has also participated in foreign-film dubbing, another important part of the Japanese voice-acting profession.

Because many of Kuwashima's roles are in ensemble animation rather than live-action celebrity vehicles, her public biography is less documented in English than those of international film stars. The shape of her career is nevertheless clear from professional listings and anime databases: steady work across television anime, original video animation, theatrical animation, games, CDs and dubbing from the mid-1990s onward. Her voice is often used for characters with intelligence, melancholy or composure, though she has also played comic and volatile parts. Among anime fans, she is recognized as a versatile seiyu whose credits connect several major franchises from the late cel-animation era through digital-era television production.
