Mike Cahill is an American filmmaker known for intimate science-fiction dramas that combine speculative premises with character-focused storytelling. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he studied economics at Georgetown University, where he met future collaborator Brit Marling. Before moving into narrative features, Cahill worked in documentary production, including projects connected with National Geographic, and developed a hands-on style that often placed him in multiple creative roles.
Cahill's breakthrough came with Another Earth, a low-budget 2011 drama co-written with Marling. The film follows a young woman and a grieving composer after the discovery of a duplicate Earth, using its science-fiction hook as a framework for guilt, loss and second chances. Cahill directed, co-wrote, produced, shot and edited the film, and its Sundance success led to wider distribution by Fox Searchlight. Box Office Mojo lists him across several of the film's core creative credits, reflecting the unusually personal scale of the production.
He followed with I Origins, another science-inflected drama, this time centered on a molecular biologist whose research into human eyes leads him toward questions of identity and belief. The film expanded Cahill's visual and thematic interest in the meeting point between science, metaphysics and emotion. In 2021 he directed and wrote Bliss, a romantic science-fiction drama starring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek about a man drawn into a possible simulated reality.

Across his features, Cahill has worked as director, writer, producer, editor and cinematographer, maintaining a reputation for cerebral genre stories made with an independent-film sensibility. His best-known work remains Another Earth and I Origins, films that use speculative ideas less for spectacle than for moral and emotional inquiry.
