Pauline Quirke is a retired English actress and writer whose screen career began in childhood and grew into one of the most recognizable television careers in British comedy and drama. Born in Hackney, London, she appeared in television as a young performer before leading her own sketch series, Pauline's Quirkes, in the 1970s. Her early film and television credits included The Elephant Man, Little Dorrit and a range of British drama productions, establishing her as a versatile character actor.
Quirke became widely known for playing Sharon Theodopolopodous in Birds of a Feather, the sitcom about two sisters navigating life after their husbands are imprisoned. The role, opposite Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph, made her a household name across the programme's original 1989-1998 run and its later revival. Her work on the series brought comedy-award recognition and helped define her public image as a warm, sharp comic performer.
Alongside comedy, Quirke built a strong dramatic résumé. She earned a BAFTA Television Award nomination for The Sculptress, later appeared as Hazel Rhodes in Emmerdale, and reached new audiences as Susan Wright in the crime drama Broadchurch. Her credits also include Down to Earth, Maisie Raine, Missing, Cold Blood, Skins and David Copperfield, reflecting a long career split between popular ensemble television and lead dramatic parts.
Away from acting, Quirke founded the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, a network of weekend performing-arts schools for young people. She was appointed MBE in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to young people, entertainment and charity. In 2025 her family announced that she had retired from professional and commercial duties after a dementia diagnosis, bringing formal closure to a career that had spanned more than five decades.
