During the Japanese Invasion of Malaya in 1941, Mei Lan, a dignified and traditional mother, raises her tenacious six year old daughter, imparting her unique words of wisdom while bonding. But as the Japanese occupy more of their country, Mei Lan witnesses first hand the horrors that are starting to unfold. She must find the courage to protect her daughter and herself from the evil that threatens their way of life.
