Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman is an American actor, producer, director, and narrator. Born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, he was raised primarily in Mississippi and developed an early interest in performance through school plays and drama competitions. After high school he served in the United States Air Force, then studied and worked in theater in Los Angeles and New York. His early professional career included stage roles, touring productions, and television work before he became widely recognizable to American audiences through the children's educational series The Electric Company.

Freeman built his reputation first as a stage and character actor. He appeared in Shakespeare productions and other New York theater work, earning Obie recognition and a Tony Award nomination for The Mighty Gents. His film breakthrough came with Street Smart in 1987, in which his performance as a volatile street hustler brought him his first Academy Award nomination. Two years later, he reached a wider audience with major roles in Glory, Lean on Me, and Driving Miss Daisy, the last of which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and helped establish his screen image as a calm, authoritative, and emotionally direct performer.

During the 1990s, Freeman became one of the most prominent American film actors of his generation. He appeared in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and worked with Clint Eastwood in the revisionist western Unforgiven. His performance as Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding in The Shawshank Redemption became one of his best-known roles and brought another Oscar nomination. He also appeared opposite Brad Pitt in David Fincher's crime thriller Se7en and in Steven Spielberg's historical drama Amistad. These films showed his ability to move between supporting and leading roles while often giving moral, reflective, or quietly commanding weight to ensemble stories.
