Forest Whitaker

Forest Steven Whitaker is an American actor, filmmaker, producer, and humanitarian whose career has combined unusually detailed character work with directing, producing, and peace advocacy. Born on 15 July 1961 in Longview, Texas, and raised in California, Whitaker initially pursued football and music before committing to acting. He studied at the University of Southern California and developed a reputation for performances that are physically specific, quiet, and deeply researched.

Whitaker made his feature-film debut in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and built momentum through supporting roles in the 1980s, including Platoon, The Color of Money, Good Morning, Vietnam, and Bloodsport. His first major critical breakthrough came as jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood's Bird. Whitaker's portrayal of Parker brought him the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival and marked him as a performer willing to transform himself for demanding roles. Through the 1990s, he worked across independent film, studio drama, and genre pieces, appearing in The Crying Game, Smoke, Phenomenon, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Panic Room, and other projects that showed his range from gentle warmth to menace.
